I am taking a brief break from my Navigating Mental Health series for something a little less dark and more enlightening. Enjoy!
Our children are quite diverse in their personalities as well as their likes and dislikes. They are also very diverse in food and eating habits. For example, one of my older boys will eat anything. He comes home from work, sits down and piles his plate full of whatever looks good to him. Doesn’t taste it, doesn’t smell it… just piles his plate high. Sometimes he dumps half a bottle of steak sauce on top (or ranch dressing), sometimes not.
Our daughter on the other hand insists on taking a small sample and performing an entire forensics investigation on it. She eyeballs it real close, pokes around with her fork attempting to decipher what her mother or I might have snuck into it. If she finds a sliver of onion or the remnants of green pepper, it’s a definite no-go.
I’ve noticed that we as Christians can behave the same way as my daughter. God hands us a blessing and we insist on dissecting it. If its not exactly to our liking, we push the plate away. Instead of being thankful and taking that blessing for our own spiritual nourishment, we reject it.
How many times have we sat under the preaching of the Word, hearing the Truth that we desperately need, but because it’s not coming from our favorite minister, we reject the entire message? Or the numerous times that a wise and well-meaning elder tries to steer us in the right direction, but because it’s not coming from your inner circle of friends, we ignore it?
We need live with open hearts and take in these gifts that God freely gives us!
